Random Sand Fact
On the beach at Velipojë in Albania, the sand is said to be full of iodine.
In Albanian, the fine-grained, dark sand is called rana e dermanit, roughly “the sand of cure”. People have long buried themselves in the sun-warmed sand as a traditional treatment, particularly for rheumatic complaints.
Locals call it healing sand. Others simply call it iodine-rich sand.
