Random Sand Fact

In Angola, a story can be drawn with a single line in sand.

Sona is a long-standing drawing tradition among the Lunda Cokwe and neighbouring peoples of eastern Angola. First, reference points are marked in a thin layer of sand. Lines are then traced around them to form geometric patterns.

The figures can carry stories, proverbs, riddles and knowledge passed between generations. The patterns have also been studied for the mathematics embedded within them.

In 2023, Sona was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
