Antigua and Barbuda

Sand Origin

Darkwood Beach Antigua and Pink Sand Beach Barbuda

Random Sand Fact

Antigua is said to have a beach for every day of the year. On its sister island Barbuda, the sand is pink.

The colour does not come from every grain being pink. Tiny red and pink shell fragments from foraminifera, single-celled organisms living in the sea, mix with pale sand from coral, shells and other carbonate material.

As waves and currents carry the material ashore, the pink tone builds in the mixture itself.

Two islands. Hundreds of beaches. Very different sand.
