Random Sand Fact
On old rooftops in Azerbaijan, the country’s best-known raw material was mixed with sand.
On the Absheron Peninsula, traditional houses have flat roofs. To make them watertight, hardened crude oil was once mixed with sifted sand and clay.
The crude oil kept the water out. Sand and clay gave the mixture firmness, so it could be spread across the roof in a dense layer.
