Random Sand Fact

In Cabo Verde, sand has become both a livelihood and a problem.

On the island of Santiago, collecting sand has long been a way to support a family. Women wade into the surf, fill buckets as the waves retreat, and carry the heavy sand back on their heads to sell to the construction industry.

The work is both hard and risky. At the same time, decades of sand extraction have contributed to shrinking beaches and a retreating shoreline.
