Random Sand Fact

In Bangui, sand is collected from the bottom of the Oubangui River. By hand.

Sand workers paddle pirogues into the river and go below the surface to bring sand up from the riverbed. The load is taken back to shore and sold to the construction industry.

The work is hard and risky, but for many people the sand provides an income that pays for food, rent and their children’s schooling.

OUAW’s sand from the Central African Republic comes from the same river.
