Croatia’s remarkable Pula Arena, dating back to the year 0, proudly stands as one of the world’s most well-preserved Roman amphitheaters. Today, the venue comes alive with concerts, movie scenes, and sporting events.
In ancient times, a layer of sand covered the battlegrounds, the arena. It provided a practical solution to easier clean the remains after intense gladiator battles – blood, body parts, and all. The surface layer, sand/harena stuck as the name for enclosed areas used for theatres or sports events regardless of surface material.
