Random Sand Fact
The bacteria bacillus pasteurii, commonly found in wetlands, can in just hours convert loose desert sand into solid rock.
An architect has suggested that unleashing the bacteria along the Sahara’s southern border could create a protective desertification wall. The unconventional idea can be connected to the Great Green Wall Initiative where a long list of nations in the Sahelo-Saharan region, including Eritrea, work together to create a green fertile landscape across Africa.
Concerns about unintended ecological impacts and the control of such a process is bound to follow. Decertification is definitely a problem but we still want sand right!
