Random Sand Fact
Around two thousand years ago, sand was used as a shock absorber when large stone blocks were quarried in Petra.
Petra is the ancient city in southern Jordan where buildings and tombs were carved directly into sandstone cliffs.
When large blocks were cut loose high above the ground, fine sand was placed below. The sand absorbed the impact as the blocks were lowered or dropped, reducing the risk of them cracking.
