Random Sand Fact

Surreal images of orange snow covering Eastern Europe got viral.

While looking unearthly, there’s a natural explanation for orange-tinted snow. Of course, it connects with sand.

Sandstorms in the Sahara lift sand and dust high into the atmosphere. Strong winds carry the particles to wherever the winds blow.

At the time of the viral snow, there were many Saharan particles in the atmosphere above Moldova when the snow started falling. The orange sand and dust followed the snow, giving all an orange tint.
