Random Sand Fact
On a beach in New Zealand, you can dig your own hot bath straight into the sand.
At low tide on Hot Water Beach, people dig holes with their hands or a spade. Beneath the sand, geothermally heated water rises towards the surface, in places over 60 degrees. Once the hole is deep enough, it fills with hot water from below.
Just a few metres away lies the cold Pacific Ocean.
If the pool gets too hot, you simply dig closer to the sea or let cooler water seep through the sand.
