GRAINS - Jewelry with Grit

GRAINS — One grain. Magnified.

A single grain of sand sits at the edge of what the eye can see. Look closer and something else appears. Structure. Form. Complexity shaped over time.

GRAINS begins there.

Each piece in this collection starts with a real grain of sand — selected, scanned using micro-CT imaging, and magnified to reveal what the eye cannot see. The grain’s structure is then recreated in silver.

The pieces do not contain sand. They reveal it.

In English the word grit carries two meanings: sand, and the determination to keep going. Sand and strength share the same word.

Each piece is named for the origin of its grain. Local language. Nothing invented.

The small is never small.

How grains are chosen

Each piece exists for a specific reason.

Some grains are chosen for location — the place carries its own weight before the form is even considered. A grain from the summit approach of Everest. A grain from the Vatican’s oldest square.

Others are chosen for form — when magnification reveals something unexpected. Some grains, looked at long enough, begin to take recognizable shapes. A star. A spiral. A pillar. There is a name for this: pareidolia. The eye finds structure where it wasn’t looking for it.

Others are chosen for grit — collected at places where endurance is the point. Sand gathered along the route of Vasaloppet. Grains from the desert floor of Marathon des Sables. These pieces carry the material evidence of what it takes to keep going.

Some grains are biological in origin — a fragment of ancient sea lily, a single-celled organism, a sea urchin spine reduced by time to the size of a grain.

Each piece is named in the language of the place it came from. Nothing is invented.

Magnification ranges from 9 to 26 times the original size. New pieces are added as grains are found, scanned and selected.

A grain of sand is formed through pressure, movement, and time. Strength in people often forms in much the same way.

Step by step. Grain by grain.

All pieces are made in 100% recycled sterling silver.
