For the first time ever, you can wear a grain of sand as a statement.
The GRAINS collection are exact models of individual grains of sand enlarged from 8 to 25 times their original sizes. Each grain goes through an MRI scan to get the shape precise at a research facility.
The sand you see when on a beach, in a desert, along a dirt road, on sports fields, or that you see covering ocean floors while diving or snorkeling may appear similar. But look close up, and you’ll find that they’re all unique, just like snowflakes.
Single grains of sand – nature’s tiny masterpieces fit perfectly in the spotlight. As do you. In short, that’s what the GRAINS Collections is all about. For the full story, see just below.
Look at sand close up or, easier, at the GRAINS collection, see what’s hidden in plain sight – incredible tiny things!
Single grains of sand, sand grain jewelry. Nature’s tiny masterpieces fit perfectly in the spotlight. As do you.
Look at sand close up to see tiny wonders hidden in plain sight. Grains of sand are Nature’s masterpieces. Beauty often unseen.
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO WEAR GRAINS OF SAND? (and place sand in the spotlight?
Because grains of sand are stunning, often unseen wonders, for one. The grains are enlarged for the human eye to awe at them.
Then it’s because of what it is – Grains of Sand. The beauty of the individual grain and the shapes large quantities can form. Then there is sand and all it’s used for. Sand is one of the world’s most used raw materials. Your life would be very different without it.
Sand might appear infinite but is scarce. It’s used in huge amounts in construction, infrastructure, and land reclamation. Sand is used:
– to filter water,
– to manufacture glass,
– in landscaping
– in electronics and computers
– in sports
– in metal castings, to name just a few.
Individual sand grains analysis can date archaeological findings, solve crimes, and follow geological changes. And sand is part of many cultural traditions. The list can continue for long.
Everything at OUAW is about sand. Yet nothing is really about sand. Instead, it’s about connections. And sand happens to be a fabulous connector.
Sand connects with people, ideas, and happenings all over our globe. It connects with history, current events, industry, science, art, culture, religion, and more. And it connects to you.
Over 1000 hands have joined to gather sand from every corner of the world for the OUAW sand jewelry. Environmental, geological, and mining departments around the globe have helped with sand permits and documents.
In the GRAINS Collection one grain of sand at a time is placed in the spotlight. The individual grains of sand can connect to the place it’s collected from, to all the places it’s been, to all people whose hands have handled it, and to you.
Most grains of sand travel far. They’re transformed both from and to something else before trillions of years later; they may reappear yet as newborn grains of sand.
Use a magnifying glass or your smartphone to enter one of nature’s often unseen art galleries. You can find individual grains in every shape and color.
Grains of sand:
– looking like vicious viruses
– shaped as ancient greek or roman pillars
– in various heart shapes
– in a perfect diamond shape
– with mandela like patterns
– shaped like tiny little stars
– in every geometrical form as spheres, squares, pyramids, and cubes looking like tiny seashells
– in all the colors of the rainbow red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet sand grains and transparent grains, white, black, and all shades in between.
Tiny wonders and some which you now can wear.
Every piece of jewelry in the GRAINS Collection is an exact model of one individual grain of sand. You can see images of the various grains, where the grains lay, and more in the product description of each grain.
Choosing which grains of sand to be the first ones put in the spotlight was difficult. From hundreds of jars of sand collected from every nation on earth, from billions of grains in each – a few thousand grains of sand were selected during the first round. From these, a few hundred single grains got chosen for a line-up. A select few were then sent away for an MRI X-ray scan.
Yet a line up later, now with a “sand jury” voting on which grains to put in the spotlight and stage first – voila – the OUAW GRAINS Collection!
Among the first grains transformed into jewelry are grains of sand collected from each of the world’s inhabited continents—every continent represented by at least one grain. The grains of sand are selected from shapes and surface structures. (Others were de-selected for the same reasons.)
Next to every piece in the GRAINS Collection, you can see images of the exact sand grain that your sand grain necklace, sand grain bracelet, or pair of sand grain earrings are modeled after.
