OUAW - THE SMALL IS NEVER SMALL

The small is never small. A grain of sand and the whole world. Same material — different scale.

Sometimes sand from every nation is gathered into one form — not as a symbol, but as material. At other times, a single grain is magnified. Form and structure become visible.

In English, grit means both sand and the determination to keep going — the same word.

The small is never small. Not in the world. Not in a grain of sand.

THE FOUNDER

Sometimes life quietly becomes smaller than we once imagined it would be. Routine grows. Curiosity fades.

It did not start with sand. It started with a feeling that something had become less than it once was.

Some years ago I caught myself wondering: Is this it?

I wanted to feel connected to something larger again — to people, places, ideas. That is where the question about sand began.

Collecting sand from around the world is one thing. Collecting it legally is another. Deserts, rivers, mountains, distant shores. Geologists, researchers, travelers and generous strangers helped along the way.

What looked simple took years. Sometimes it did not work at all. So I asked again. And again. And once more.

Somewhere in that process came the next oh wow — OUAW, pronounced “oh wow.” That sound when something small turns out to be something vast.

The small suddenly becomes vast.

Did I mention I’m a bit of a sand nerd?
