Random Sand Fact
In Honduras, sand can have an owner long before anyone comes to collect it.
Among the Lenca of La Campa, local sand is used together with clay in a pottery tradition passed down for generations.
Traditionally, places and natural materials have been understood as belonging to ángeles de la tierra, spirits of the earth. When sand, clay and other resources are taken, the earth may be repaid through pagos a la tierra — offerings or gifts.
The belief is not as widely practised today, but some potters still maintain it. Sand is material to use – but not necessarily something humans alone own.
