Random Sand Fact
According to a Fijian legend, Fiji’s best-known sand dunes are what remains of a rock shattered in mid-air.
The dunes lie at a river mouth on the main island’s south coast, rise up to 60 metres and became the country’s first national park.
Two spirits went to war. One hurled a huge rock towards the coast. The other stopped it and smashed it before it reached the ground. The pieces fell across the coast and became the dunes.
The dunes are still moving. As the wind shifts them, potsherds, stone tools and human bones come to light, around 2,600 years old.
