Random Sand Fact
In Montenegro, sand and river sediment built an entire island.
In the 19th century, the Bojana River began carrying large amounts of sand and other sediment towards the Adriatic. Where the water slowed, grains settled to the bottom and new layers began to build.
Over time, Ada Bojana emerged, an island of almost five square kilometres with several kilometres of sandy beach. Today it is used for swimming, naturism and kitesurfing.
A local legend says it all began with a shipwreck that trapped sand around the wreck. Research points instead to changes in the river system and the huge amount of sediment it carried.
