In a love story from Pakistan, tracks in the sand show the way to the beloved.
Sassui wakes one morning to find the man she loves gone. His brothers have carried him off on a camel. In the sand, the camels’ tracks are clear, and barefoot she follows them into the desert.
As long as the tracks can be seen, she knows where to go. But the wind drives fresh sand over them, and they disappear.
One of Pakistan’s great poets wrote verses about the story. They are still sung at his tomb.
