Random Sand Fact
Kuwait is full of sand. Yet the country imports sand.
In the desert, the wind moves sand by making the grains bounce. The wind lifts the grains, causes them to fall, and makes them strike other grains repeatedly. Over time, the wind wears away the edges, leaving round grains with a frosted surface.
Concrete needs angular grains that grip each other and the cement. The round desert grains slide past each other instead.
Kuwait’s desert sand can also contain salts and fine particles that have to be washed out.
