Random Sand Fact

In Syria, a portrait can be built from grains of sand.

In old Damascus, artisans fill glass bottles with coloured sand. Using a narrow funnel and a feather, they guide the grains into place, layer by layer.

Landscapes, names, family trees and even faces emerge from the sand — without a brush and without painting on the glass.

The image exists only because every grain stays exactly where it is placed.
