Random Sand Fact

In Suriname, sand covers the floor of a synagogue.

In Paramaribo, there is a synagogue where the floor is covered with sand instead of wood or stone. The tradition has been linked both to the biblical journey through the desert and to the memory of a time when Jews gathered in secret, when sand could soften the sound of footsteps.

What might otherwise be blown away or swept aside has been allowed to remain. Here, sand belongs to the room, the memory, and the prayer.
