Sand Origin

Kitimtim St, Dar es Salaam, Mbezi beach district

Random Sand Fact

Two bow-shaped dunes, with arms pointing forward, slowly wander the Tanzanian savanna. Local Maasai regard the dunes sacred.

Rare moving dunes, barkans, form as the wind blows sand grains in one direction. The sand in the dues wandering here contains iron. If the sand, as here, magnetizes, it attracts other magnetic grains. Over time, a small pile of sand transforms into a great dune. If you toss sand from the dune, magnetic force will hold it together and draw it back to the dune.

A wandering magnetic dune sounds like something out of a fairy tale, doesn’t it?!
