In Nicosia, some streets still end in a wall of sandbags.

The capital of Cyprus is the last in Europe divided by a buffer zone. A strip of no man’s land runs through the old town, in places only a few metres wide. The houses and shops inside it have stood abandoned for decades.

Along its edge lies what was built in haste during the fighting: barrels, walls and sandbags, stacked in windows and across streets. Bullet holes still mark the façades around them.

Crossings have opened since then, and today people walk between north and south through the checkpoints. The sandbags are still there.
