In southern Kyrgyzstan, there is a sacred place where pilgrims lie in hot sand.
Ysyk-Kum lies between two low hills in Osh Province. The sand is described as white, unusually hot and unlike ordinary sand.
Pilgrims come there, recite verses from the Qur’an and cover their bodies with the sun-heated sand while keeping their faces shaded.
Many are elderly or seek relief from joint pain, recovery after broken bones, colds or infertility.
In July and August, the sand becomes so hot that around 15–20 minutes is enough to make them sweat.
