In southern Kyrgyzstan, there is a sacred place where pilgrims lie in hot sand.
The place is called Ysyk-Kum, hot sand, and lies between two low hills. The sand is described as white, unusually hot and unlike ordinary sand.
Pilgrims come there, recite verses from the Qur’an and cover their bodies with the sun-heated sand while keeping their faces shaded.
Many are elderly or seek relief from pain and illness.
In July and August, the sand becomes so hot that around 15–20 minutes is enough to make them sweat.
