Random Sand Fact

Well constructed under water sand castles? The work of fish seeking a partner.

Male Cichlid fish build sandcastles at Lake Malawi to attract females once or twice a year.

There are about 200 species of cichlid fish in Malawi each with its own building technique. The ones living in shallows with good light build elaborate sandcastles while those deep in the dark dig pits in the sand.

If a female likes what she sees, she’ll lay her eggs in the building. Creative architecture, for some reason, means that fewer males will challenge the constructor.

Who ever said building sand castles is a kids’ game?
