Random Sand Fact
A large share of the sand we use goes into construction, not least as an ingredient in concrete. But humans are not the only ones building with sand.
In Malaysia, the weaver ant Camponotus texens uses its own larvae as tiny silk spinners. A worker holds a larva in its jaws and moves it back and forth while the larva releases silk.
Other workers collect grains of sand and other solid material and build them into the fresh silk. The surface is then worked until it becomes firm and smooth.
