Why do red buckets of sand hang at petrol stations in Bangladesh?
The buckets are metal, marked FIRE and filled with dry sand. They are part of the stations’ fire protection.
Water would be the wrong choice. Thrown onto burning petrol, the water sinks away, the petrol floats up on top and the fire travels with the water in every direction.
Sand does the opposite. If there is a fire, it settles like a lid over the flames and smothers them. If petrol has spilled, the sand soaks it up before it can catch fire.
