Random Sand Fact

On Saint Vincent, Nadia Huggins photographs black sand underwater.

Along Saint Vincent’s volcanic coast, the artist swims out with her camera and follows how currents move the grains, create patterns and erase them again.

When the volcano La Soufrière erupted, she watched ash fall across the whole island. She had always known that black sand comes from volcanoes, but now she understood how: what is flung up from the earth in time becomes the coast she has photographed.
