Random Sand Fact
In Turkmenistan, the desert is called black sand, though the sand is golden yellow.
Karakum means black sand. Kara means black and kum sand. But in the Turkic languages, “black sand” is a word for sand that stays put, held in place by shrubs and grass. Most of the desert is like that.
Only a small part of the desert is bare, loose sand that wanders with the wind.
