A dust devil does not begin in the sky. It begins with sand grains starting to jump.
In Ethiopia’s dry landscapes, heated ground can set the air rotating and create a dust devil. When the wind catches loose sand, the grains first begin to vibrate, then bounce across the ground.
The jumping grains knock even finer particles loose, which are caught by the vortex and pulled upwards. The result can be a tall, narrow column of sand and dust moving across the landscape.
