Sand as a safety measure?
When an explosives factory was planned at Upton Towans in England in the nineteenth century, a site was needed where the landscape could help limit damage from an possible explosion. The sand dunes became part of the solution.
The most dangerous buildings were placed between the dunes and surrounded by high banks of sand to help contain the blast and direct its force upwards.
