In Guyana, a pile of sand at the door can keep evil spirits out.
Guyanese folklore is full of jumbees – restless or dangerous spirits that can appear in different forms.
One traditional way of protecting a home is to leave sand, salt or rice outside the door. A jumbee is said to be unable to resist counting every grain. If the pile is large enough, sunrise arrives before the counting is finished.
Here, the sheer number of grains is the protection: too many to count in one night.
