Guess what’s filtered most of the water you’ve ever consumed? Yup, sand!
People have used sand to purify water since ancient times. Sand can filter out some pathogens, organic contaminants, and heavy metal ions. Finer sand grains with less free space between them filter more effectively than coarser sands.
In parts of Liberia access to clean and safe drinking water is still an issue. The simplest way to sand filter water is still seen here with water poured into a bag filled with ordinary local sand hanging over a large bowl for collecting the water underneath.
