What resource does the world use most after water? Sand.
Singapore shows why. The country has increased its land area by around 25 per cent by creating new land where there was once sea.
Sand and other fill materials have created ground for ports, an airport and entire urban districts. For many major modern projects, Singapore has imported enormous quantities of sand from other countries.
Even the beaches on resort island Sentosa were created with imported sand.
