Singapore is one of the largest importers of sand and the world’s biggest sand user if divided per person. 

The continuous supply of sand drives Singapore’s growth both in land area and economy. Imported sand has expanded its land area by about 20%. Where there used to be sea now stands, ports and airports, luxury hotels, casinos, and high-rise apartments.

Neighboring nations that earlier supplied Singapore with sand are regulating or stopping it to protect the environment from where the sand is taken.

The paradise-like beaches on well-visited Sentosa Island is for example, all man-made.
