Sand Origin
Yuguang Island Beach Taiwan is not yet a member of the United Nations. Some recognize it as a sovereign country, others do not. Regardless, OUAW wants to salute and connect with the people, ideas, and places of Taiwan too!
Random Sand Fact
In southern Taiwan, a whole beach was put at risk when its sand became sought after for necklaces and wall decorations.
The sand there is made almost entirely of crushed seashells, coral and the shells of other sea creatures. It was dug up and exported to places such as Japan and Hawaii, until the beach was close to disappearing.
Today the beach is a protected area that visitors may not enter without a permit. Anyone who wants to feel the sand can do so in a small exhibition hall nearby.
