Random Sand Fact
On the largest island of the Comoros, there is sand where almost every second grain is green.
In sand deposits near Pidjani on Grande Comore, olivine makes up 40–50 percent of the grains in some places. The olive-green mineral forms in volcanic rock and is released as the rock breaks down.
Such high concentrations are unusual. Olivine weathers quickly when exposed to air and water, so it rarely remains as sand for long.
