Random Sand Fact
In Germany, a lightning strike is preserved in sand.
When lightning hits sand, the intense heat can melt the grains in a fraction of a second. As the material rapidly cools, it can form a hollow glass tube called a fulgurite.
One found in the Senne region of Germany is more than 5.4 metres long and is described as the world’s longest fulgurite on display.
Lightning becomes glass. Sand keeps its shape.
