You’ve heard about Sahara and its sand. But the “European Sahara”?

That’s what Deliblato Sands in Serbia is called. This or “the Old Continent’s oldest desert”. As the nickname suggests, Deliblato Sands is a large sandy area, once part of a prehistoric desert. Winds brought the sand here and shaped the area with sand dune reliefs.

Don’t worry about getting sand in your shoes if you want to hike here. The sand dunes, still perfectly shaped, are now covered and held in place by vegetation. The area is a nature reserve and home to a long list of flora and fauna, including wolves.
