As Greenland’s ice melts, its coast gains sand.
Along most Arctic coasts, sand erodes away as the permafrost thaws. In Greenland, it goes the other way. The ice has ground the rock into sand and gravel, and meltwater carries it towards the coast.
At the same time, global demand for construction sand is rising. Researchers see a rare example of an Arctic country that may gain something from climate change.
In a nationwide study, three out of four Greenlanders supported extracting and exporting the sand, preferably with local involvement.
