Random Sand Fact
Every year, sand on Uruguay’s beaches becomes part of a major religious celebration.
On 2 February, people gather to honour Iemanjá, goddess of the sea in Afro-Uruguayan religions. Candles are pressed into sand, small sandaltars are made and the beaches fill with singing, drums and offerings.
Flowers, fruit and sometimes jewellery are given to Iemanjá before offerings are carried towards the water. In several places, participants are now encouraged to leave only materials that will not harm the sea or beach.
