Haiti

In a rock wall in Haiti, scientists found the sand that led them to the dinosaurs’ asteroid. 

For a long time, people knew that a giant asteroid had hit the Earth when the dinosaurs died out, but no one knew where. In southern Haiti, scientists found a layer of sand-sized grains, about half a metre thick. 

In other parts of the world the same layer was only a centimetre or so. Many of the grains were tiny balls of glass, melted rock that had rained down after the impact. The thicker the layer, the closer the crater. 

The trail led to a crater buried under a peninsula in Mexico, and the glass in Haiti turned out to come from there.
