Random Sand Fact

Does stupefying fish sound like a magical trick from Harry Potter? In Haiti, it was a traditional fishing method.

Toxic sap or bark from the Sandbox trees mixed with sand used to be thrown into still water to stupefy fish for temporary easy catching.

The name Sandbox Tree comes as its unripe seed capsules were used to hold fine, dry sand for blotting ink before blotting paper and later, non-blotting pens were invented.

(If you click to the US next, you’ll hear more about blotting sand that holds a special place in the US Senate Chamber.)
