In Oman, the ruins of a legendary desert city were found thanks to tracks that could only be seen from space.

Legends told of a wealthy frankincense-trading city that had vanished in the desert. Lawrence of Arabia is said to have called it the Atlantis of the Sands.

Researchers studied radar images from space shuttles. The radar saw through the dry sand and revealed ancient caravan routes, packed hard by countless camels. The routes met at a single point.

 That is where the researchers decided to dig and beneath the ground a fortress was found. It had collapsed into a sinkhole and then been covered by sand. Whether it is the legendary city is still debated.
