Random Sand Fact
Did you know that Hungary has a desert-like area with barren sand dunes?
Dunes formed by the wind constantly change in shape and size. In the Hungarian dunes, you’ll see both macro and micro formations. Shapes depend on wind velocity, sand grain size, and natural obstacles such as rocks, plants, and trees. Forms from tiny waves and ripples to tongue-shaped formations behind wind-stopping obstacles and parabolic-shaped dunes. The constant direction of the wind flow makes parabolic dunes slowly move forward 0.5-1.0 meters per year. As sand grains bounce up and over the crest, they create periodic mini-avalanches, ever so slightly nudging the front edge.Sand – constantly on the move!
