In Sardinia, a bottle of sand can be stopped at security.
The island’s white and pink beaches draw millions of visitors every year, and many want to take a piece home. One handful is nothing. But when everyone takes a handful, the beaches slowly disappear.
That is why it is forbidden to take sand from Sardinia’s beaches. Signs in several languages warn visitors along the coast, and at airports and ports, officers search for bottles and bags of sand.
Every year the seizures pile up. When summer ends, the sand is carried back to the beaches where it belongs.
