Random Sand Fact

In Kosovo, archaeologists uncover Roman mosaics. Then they cover them with sand again.

At the Roman city of Ulpiana, mosaics have survived beneath the ground for centuries.

Once uncovered, they are documented, cleaned and conserved. But leaving them exposed makes them vulnerable to weather, vegetation and wear.

So after the work is finished, a protective layer can be placed over the mosaic and covered with loose sand.

First sand is removed to reveal the past. Then sand is put back to preserve it.
