Random Sand Fact

Sand drawings are one-finger compositions of graceful geometric patterns made directly on the ground. UNESCO has classified Vanuatu’s sand drawings as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”.

The Vanuatu sand drawings have several functions and meanings. They illustrate stories, serve as mnemonic devices to remember rituals, tales, local history, and social relations, and they are objects of contemplation.

A National action plan protects the drawings’ use and meaning of not getting lost.
