About 200 tons of sand are spread over Vaduz Town Hall Plaza in Liechtenstein yearly. And this even though no seashore exists within its or any neighboring countries’ borders.
Being one of the world’s only two doubly landlocked countries, Uzbekistan being the other, does not stop Liechtenstein from hosting international beach volleyball tournaments.
There is sand in Liechtenstein even though there are no beaches. Erosion and rivers have transported and deposited sand here over millions of years. Whether the sand spread over the town square originates from Liechtenstein is unclear.
Beach sports sand must be of a special shape and type. It’s meticulously chosen. Perhaps as carefully as sand for necklaces containing sand from each country…?
