Random Sand Fact

How do you build a beach in the middle of a town square?

Liechtenstein has no coastline and no natural beaches. Yet Rathausplatz in Vaduz has repeatedly been transformed into an arena for international beach volleyball.

Hundreds of tonnes of sand are brought in and spread across the square. Stands are built around the court, creating a temporary beach arena in the middle of the city.

When the tournament is over, the sand is removed and the square becomes a square again.
