In Senegal, there is a dance school where dancers train directly on sand.

It is called École des Sables, the school of sands, and has become a meeting place for dancers from across Africa and the world. In one of its open studios, the floor is sand.

Here, every step meets a surface that gives way and shifts. The dance is shaped not only by the body, but by the ground it moves against.
