In South Korea, sand runs through an hourglass for an entire year.
The hourglass stands by a beach on the east coast. The place became famous when one of the country’s most-watched TV dramas was filmed there. Fittingly, the drama was called Sandglass.
The hourglass itself weighs forty tonnes and holds eight tonnes of sand. It is built so that the sand runs for exactly one year.
Every New Year’s Eve, people gather here to watch the first sunrise of the year. At midnight, the hourglass is turned, and a new year of sand begins to run.
